Ontario jails now allowing small quantities of wine for celebrating the Eucharist to be brought into prison.
(CHT to the reader who e-mailed!)
EXCERPTS:
A policy has now been spelled out, according to Julia Noonan, a spokeswoman with Ontario’s correctional service.
"The priest may bring in 1½-2 ounces … as needed for that day," she said.
ALSO:
"Unfortunately, it came across that we were discriminating against the Catholics and we weren’t."
In fact, she pointed out, authorities at Lindsay had also prevented Anglican clergy, including a bishop, from celebrating the Eucharist because wine was needed for the sacrament. "We were therefore discriminating against the religious rights of all Christians who use alcoholic wine for celebrating the Eucharist," she confessed.
Yes, but the forces of evil win two battles this week:

That was me.
BillyHW, with any luck, that victory is going to be postponed. Unless something disastrous happens – and I’m not saying it won’t – the government is set to fall before the same-sex marriage bill can pass.
Gee, it’s already time to start campaigning again. Where’s my ‘Conservative Party of Canada’ T-shirt? I think I’m going to help out organizing the party scrutineering in our riding. It was terribly disorganized last time, and I think scrutineers are the coolest people ever, the front-line defenders of democracy, and much defamed as partisan hacks. Honestly, we’re the people who are standing between your ballot and fraud. (Ok, if there’s fraud, we might be committing it too, but that’s why we’re multi-party, to watch each other.)
But same-sex marriage is already a fact of life in most of the country because of the courts. The failure of this bill to pass won’t change that. It will become like abortion, where we have no law at all and all the politicians will be happy to leave it at that. If Harper wins he might try to use the notwithstanding clause but it’s unlikely he’ll have enough seats to get it done. Then the Conservatives themselves, as if paying homage to the One True Stupid Party™, will probably institutionalize “civil unions” as the perfect Canadian compromise solution. We will have gay marriage in all but name brought to you by the people who claimed to be the saviours of marriage.
But don’t heed anything I say. I’m well known for for my unwarranted pie-in-the-sky optimism.
🙂
Anyways, speaking of volunteering for the campaign, what riding are you in? You wouldn’t happen to be in Landslide Annie’s riding would you? I’m sure they could use a few scrutineers just to keep the Right Honourable Joe Clark honest.
😉
I went to the Conservative nomination meeting in my riding today and a supposedly pro-life guy won. I guess that’s good news. He will have to overcome a 30% to 50% deficit against a 4-time incumbent (former Catholic school principal who scores a perfect zero on the Catholic Answers voters guide, you know the type) to win the seat though (not likely). I also met a Campaign Life Coalition guy (CLC are the ones who did this survey: http://campaignlifecoalition.com/elections/federal/2004/) and we chatted for a bit. He told me some incredible stories about the pure evilness of Jean Chretien that I had never heard before. Apparently this guy had worked really hard in ’93 to win 26 Liberal nominations for solid pro-lifers but then right before the election Chretien rewrote the party constitution so that he could parachute candidates into ridings. That year Chretien parachuted precisely 26 candidates into ridings. Quick, guess which ones? All radical feminists too, apparently.
Oh, and one of those ridings was my riding, and this guy I was speaking to was the candidate who had won the original nomination and was pushed aside. Also learned that this kind man with the almost albino-like snow-white hair was Opus Dei. Neato!
I also shook hands with the man going up against the Hideous Gorgon of Mississauga (http://www.carolynparrish.parl.gc.ca/). Cover your eyes!
It was quite a day.
I’m thinking of volunteering for my candidate too, but I don’t have a car, can’t walk door to door and am not good on the phone…so I’m not sure what I could do.
