Author: Jimmy Akin

Jimmy was born in Texas, grew up nominally Protestant, but at age 20 experienced a profound conversion to Christ. Planning on becoming a Protestant seminary professor, he started an intensive study of the Bible. But the more he immersed himself in Scripture the more he found to support the Catholic faith, and in 1992 he entered the Catholic Church. His conversion story, "A Triumph and a Tragedy," is published in Surprised by Truth. Besides being an author, Jimmy is the Senior Apologist at Catholic Answers, a contributing editor to Catholic Answers Magazine, and a weekly guest on "Catholic Answers Live."

  1. Now, that’s one heck of a cat! Not only does it stand on it’s hind legs for over 40 seconds, it doesn’t seem to blink or breathe, either!

  2. Traveller used the Kzin? AFAIK, they’re Larry Niven’s creation, although they crossed over into the animated Star Trek.
This is impressive, but given that I’ve seen cats climbing ladders (both directions), not shocking.

  3. For some reason, calling him Standing Cat makes it much, much funnier. Ditto the headline “Everything you must know” (and Jimmy’s itals are the subtle icing on the cake of humor).

  4. Look at that, he has his own website.
And OH MY, here’s Standing Cat in Boots. It’s digital trickery, but WOW, funny.
Some funny comments at the site Jimmy linked to:
“There’s a sad little part of me that wants to buy that cat some boots.”
    “That’s no mere cat.”
    “The Stance Of Awesomeness.”

  5. If it develops opposable thumbs, we could be looking at the end of the human dominion of Planet Earth.

  6. Mark: Indeed. Its instinct for predation is such that it was compelled to stand, just to look out a window at potential prey, even when there was no possibility of it getting through the glass.
If it gets opposable thumbs then jump quick, monkey boys! We’re all in trouble!
JFK: While I played Traveller a few times, and while I think my first exposure to the Kzinti was in the ST:AS episode adapted from Larry Niven’s short story “The Soft Weapon,” it is primarily from Niven’s Known Space series that I know the Kzinti (Ringworld, etc.).
Of late I’ve been especially enjoying the Fleet of Worlds series (Fleet of Worlds, Juggler of Worlds, Destroyer of Worlds) by Larry Niven & Edward M. Lerner.

  7. I think I got my cat peoples confused. Traveller has Aslans and we know who they were named after. I knew the Kzinti from Star Fleet Battles game, a Start Trek based ship to ship combat game. I didn’t know they were in the animated series and were created by Larry Niven.

  8. There were cat people in Dr Who, too – planet of the Cheetah People from the Sylvester McCoy era (late 80’s), and just recently during David Tennant’s tenure.

  9. Pachyderminator–If you’re asking about the music in the video, it’s apparently a song called “Cats on Mars” from the anime series Cowboy Bebop. You can find the original lyrics (which seem to be in some sort of quasi-Japanese) and an English translation here.

  10. “If it develops opposable thumbs, we could be looking at the end of the human dominion of Planet Earth.” Hmmm. The first time I read an article about meerkats, I said “If those things start making pottery, I’m going to start worrying!” (Btw, I think Le Chat is a little bitty Chanur…)
