CHTs to the readers who sent links to the following . . .
First, there’s an origami version of Cthulhu:

As an evil elder being, Cthulhu has a great deal of vanity, so it’s no surprise that he’s into vanity plates:

I don’t think I want to know what "Kids First" means in this context.

Jimmy was born in Texas, grew up nominally Protestant, but at age 20 experienced a profound conversion to Christ. Planning on becoming a Protestant seminary professor, he started an intensive study of the Bible. But the more he immersed himself in Scripture the more he found to support the Catholic faith, and in 1992 he entered the Catholic Church. His conversion story, "A Triumph and a Tragedy," is published in Surprised by Truth. Besides being an author, Jimmy is the Senior Apologist at Catholic Answers, a contributing editor to Catholic Answers Magazine, and a weekly guest on "Catholic Answers Live."

At least the people who got the Cthlhu license plate were helping out the schools…I guess.
“O.K. kids, take your seats. Today’s class will focus on the eldritch horror. Can anyone describe gibbering madness?”
I’ve seen the license plate before and every time I do I remember a guy I new in college in the late 80s who had Virginia plates that said “Cthulhu”. And then I get worried.
FWIW Virginia’s “Kids First” plates support an anti-domestic violence organization.
Kid’s first, then he eats or destroys the rest of us.
I’m confused…I think this is the first I’ve heard of “Cthulhu”…could someone explain?
Jimmy, here are a bunch of Cthulu-related toys. “Cute, but wrong,” is their tagline. http://www.warehouse23.com/info/plush.html
H.P. Lovecraft elder space god type thing. Destroyer of worlds type nasty critter. Wikipedia should have an entry on it I’m sure.
Watch the videos at “CallsForCthulu.blogspot.com” sometime. Hilarious for the most part.
I’ve seen a WWCD T-Shirt before.
Destroyer of worlds
Isn’t that an SG-1 character?
I’ve seen a WWCD T-Shirt before.
And your point is?
I’ve seen not only a WWCD t-shirt, but also a WWCD jacket, WWCD sweats, and even a WWCD friendship bracelet — imagine that!
I saw bumper stickers and buttons the last few election saying “Vote Cthulhu, why choose the LESSER evil?”
Sadly, the ’08 elections it might just be true…
Parents. You need to start your college funds now. Have you SEEN the projected tuition costs for Miskatonic Univeristy?
Personally I only ever worry about Cthulu around election time. I end up getting so disgusted with both parties and all the canidates that I want to post the following sign in my yard:
Vote Cthulu.
Why settle for the lesser evil?
Stupid obessions…
You guys need to distract yourselves better.
Buy a paintball gun. They are really fun.
Esspecially when you shoot them at losers who obsess over an ugly version of Hello Kitty.
Hey isn’t Lovecraft Satanic? Wont’ it convince kids to become cultists? Isn’t there a Necronomicon cult? What’s Jimmy doing advertising for Satanists?
(Tongue in cheek).

I wonder if he realizes the irony in his post?
Nah.
*LOL*! I have to admit, my first thought after reading this combox was, “Wait, where are all the folks who were just here railing about the evils of Harry Potter? Isn’t Cthulu just as bad?”
That being said, we recieved a stuffed Cthulu as a wedding gift. He’s actually pretty cute. 🙂
Actually, based on a JA post I downloaded some Lovecraft to my palm. I made it to the index before I realised this was not for me. I’m not entertained by scary evil stuff.
August Derleth, who took over the Cthulhu writing after Lovecraft’s death, was a practicing Catholic who also wrote saints’ lives for children, some of which are now in print again thanks to Ignatius Press. Check ’em out:

Since finding this out, every time I read “Father Marquette” to the kids I imagine a great tentacly beast rising out of the river waters in front of the intrepid priest’s little canoe….
O. H.
Derleth did more than that — he got a papal blessing for those childrens tales, and some of his other fiction were considered among the best fiction of a Catholic writer in the time they were written.
I collect his books — signed editions of them, including his H.P.L.
But of course, he also was a fan of Robert E. Howard. You know — magic and mayham! Evil evil evil (tongue in cheek again).
Hey, you say that like there’s something wrong with crushing your enemies, to see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women. 😉
I don’t understand this Cthulhu thing, or the whole point of your post, Jimmy…
Brad– he’s a Lovecraft fan.
I find it too scary, but I still sometimes have Wizard of Oz nightmares. (The trees; my mom has nightmares about the pig pen, before she even got to Oz.)
Oh, and the plate is a very evil elder being who makes folks go nuts just by looking at him… and has a “Children First!” plate.
Couple of implications of what exactly “children first” means…..

You’ve made my day! I’ve got that Fr. Marquette book (very good stuff) and I was completely unaware of the author’s other works!
I’m a little surprised no one has linked Ctulhu to the covert ideologies of some (not all) anti-domestic-violence advocates, e.g. close government supervision of the family.
