UNMITIGATED GEEKY COOLNESS!!!

Something positive to end the week on.

A ten-gallon CHT to the reader who e-mailed!

How this works. (Maybe.)

Author: Jimmy Akin

Jimmy was born in Texas, grew up nominally Protestant, but at age 20 experienced a profound conversion to Christ. Planning on becoming a Protestant seminary professor, he started an intensive study of the Bible. But the more he immersed himself in Scripture the more he found to support the Catholic faith, and in 1992 he entered the Catholic Church. His conversion story, "A Triumph and a Tragedy," is published in Surprised by Truth. Besides being an author, Jimmy is the Senior Apologist at Catholic Answers, a contributing editor to Catholic Answers Magazine, and a weekly guest on "Catholic Answers Live."

  1. So sticking a bunch of mentos into a Diet Coke 2 liter will make it expand big time??
What was on the top of each 2 liter?? Some type of spout?

  2. I think the tube on top of each 2-liter is the Mentos “launch tube” for lack of a better term. It probably holds a roll of candies so it can drop in when triggered. Apparently it is important that the whole package of Mentos drop into the bottle at once. I am not sure how each bottle triggers the next one, though. Anyone figure that out?

  3. Jimmy,
Extreme geeky coolness! But I don’t think it merits a 10 gallon CHT, but rather a 251 liter CHT!

  4. Yeah… it works. Have pictures of my 22 and 18 year old brothers doing it a couple months ago. The put a tube of some sort on the top of the spout as well and were able to get the eruption to launch higher. Didn’t try to launch others in a trigger fashion though. Will have to pass them this video link.
Money well spent? To them I guess. 🙂

  5. That was seriously impressive choreography and music.
They should take it live to Vegas… 🙂

  6. St. Thomas Aquinas wrote that the difference between work and play is that work has a purpose, while play does not, but that there must be a time for play and even foolishness. This was definitely foolish, but it was also the time for it.
I don’t know about the *prize*, though; that could be construed as a threat.

    Christin:
Could it be they were all timed-release somehow?
    Dunno for sure… anyone?

  8. Okay, sillies, they pulled a string to drop the Mentos into the bottle. Then they arranged for the first bottle’s drop to pull the string of the next bottle. Then they set up the domino course with all the bottles attached by strings. And I rofl.

  9. Three comments in one:
    1. These guys have waaaaaaaay too much time on their hands. 🙂
    2. Quote: “Okay, sillies, they pulled a string to drop the Mentos into the bottle. Then they arranged for the first bottle’s drop to pull the string of the next bottle. But I could be wrong.
    3. Apparently these same guys made a previous video which is not quite as impressive, but still neat. You can see it here:

  10. AnonnyMouse,
“What happens when you drink that and then eat mentos?
Maybe I don’t want to know.”

But we do! Please video tape if you conduct experiment.
    Take care and God bless,

  11. Diet Coke & Mentos a la Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas! I’ve never seen the fountains in person, but that’s the first thing that I thought of when I saw this video (besides, of course, wondering how they have so much free time and money!) LOL!

  12. Actually, for the domino effect, it appears that they have some kind of lid on top of the tube, which in turn is on top of the first bottle. (In other words, the lid is above the Mentos, which are inside the tube.) The lid is then attached by a string to the second bottle. So when the Mentos are dropped into the first bottle, it explodes and knocks the lid off. The motion of the lid getting knocked off pulls the string, thus triggering the second bottle. At least that’s how it looks to me.

  13. >>Okay —
    >>SO:
    >>String Theory: 2
    >>Explosion Theory: 1
    No! No! No!
    We are Catholics.
We are not an either/or people.
    We are a both/and people.
It is both string theory and big bang.

  14. No! No! No!
    We are Catholics.

    We are a both/and people.
It is both string theory and big bang.

    That was classic!

  15. We are traditionalist Catholics, therefore it’s neither and it illustrates the domino effect of Vatican II as it abrogated the Pius V mass which was infallible by Quo Primum…and on and on and on and on….
    🙂

Scott W: That was hilarious! (no offense to Ultras, though; all in good humour, folks; we all family here)

  17. One of these guys’ videos plays at the start of the Blue Man Group’s concerts. I think they used fluorescent lighting to make some of the experiments glow. Great stuff.

  18. Yes. Diet anything is a waste.
Yes. Diet anything is a waste.

No, not the coke – the Mentos. With all those mints gone, how are hip young people in Europe to figure their way out of challenging situations?

  19. I tried it with my kids…it works great and it’s a lot of fun. Perhaps it’s even the kind of thing that could wipe that look off of Nancy Pelosi’s face if administered as a medical procedure! (Sorry about mixing threads–I couldn’t help myself! One thread was like a botttle of diet soda, and the other…well…you know)

  20. There is another mentos+dietcoke video which has become (in)famous via YouTube. Two ways to find it:
    (1) Go to YouTube.com, and then search for “mentos banned” (don’t put the quotes in the search box). Then click on one of the results of that search which is titled “Chug and Blow”
    (2) Go to this link:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tSXMNqIPZTw
I’ve given both sets of directions in case Jimmy feels it is inappropriate to link to it directly from his combox.
There is some minor bad language in the video (and in its combox), other than that it is just a tad bit gross. Watch carefully and you’ll observe that more than one of the “scientist’s” sphincters was likely forced open by the chemical reaction. The “experiment” properly begins at approx. 30 seconds into the video.
Best and classic line from this video: “Alright, now watch this …”

  21. Innocencio: But we do! Please video tape if you conduct experiment.
My roommates and I did the Mentos and Coke thing over the Fourth of July. Video of me drinking and popping a Mento is on my blog at this link.
The foam of the Diet Coke fills up your mouth so fast that you either have to let it spew out or you’ll choke on it.
