Mystery photo. Where am (was) I?
Author: Jimmy Akin
Jimmy was born in Texas, grew up nominally Protestant, but at age 20 experienced a profound conversion to Christ. Planning on becoming a Protestant seminary professor, he started an intensive study of the Bible. But the more he immersed himself in Scripture the more he found to support the Catholic faith, and in 1992 he entered the Catholic Church. His conversion story, "A Triumph and a Tragedy," is published in Surprised by Truth. Besides being an author, Jimmy is the Senior Apologist at Catholic Answers, a contributing editor to Catholic Answers Magazine, and a weekly guest on "Catholic Answers Live." That’s a tough call. We have several of those same crosses throughout Tennessee.
I always appreciate how you incorporate your boots into your photos!

You are at the Missouri-Illinois border. I have many pictures myself at that place. It’s a beautiful cross and I just had to get a picture of it on my way by — I passed it the first time but couldn’t get a snapshot, but on another roadtrip I couldn’t resist 🙂
You’re just outside of Groom, TX along I-30.
Paul says “You are at the Missouri-Illinois border”. I live next to that border and it is the Mississippi River. But perhaps there are exceptions….!
Effingham, IL
I believe that you are on I-70/I-55 near Effingham, Illinois.
I take it back, that Cross is seen from an interstate road, you are on a back road.
You are in Texas near the site of the world’s largest cross. It’s along I-40, but I forget where. You’re on the access road to it. (I’ve got a pic of me by it somewhere.)
Oook. The town is Groom, TX. But it is I-40. (Taking a trip Amarillo? Did you get there by morning?)
Yeah, that’s Groom, TX. Be sure to stop by Our Lady’s Restaurant.
There’s one like that in Florida someplace. Memory is fogged by years and child-induced lack of sleep.
It is definitely Groom and I-40 (I happen to live near Amarillo and used to drive by it once a month). So why are you out this way?
Interstate 75 going south from Knoxville, TN, right around the Sweetwater exit.
Going into Knoxville, TN, right next to an Adult Bookstore. Always wondered which came first.
The following site reports Effingham, Illinois, as having the world’s largest cross.

That internet site also provides details about that cross.
However, depending on whom you ask, I am the world’s largest cross
.

Mark, Effingham IL is close to the border. On a road trip anything within an hour is considered close 🙂
Effingham, not far from Greenup, where we bury.
Or a place with a cross just like Effingham.
Not a clue. All those Plains states look alike to me. 🙂
If I remember correctly, it looks like you’re approximately 30 miles south of Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea.
Looks like Groom, TX. Been there a couple times. There was a life-size stations of the cross, if I remember correctly. Among other things, like an empty tomb.
I don’t think it’s Groom, TX. The place in the photo is not flat enough to be Groom.
Here’s a link to the famous Effingham cross.

And the Groom, TX cross looks very similar.

I’ve seen giant crosses that look exactly like that in both Effingham, Illinois (visible from I-70 / I-57) and in Paducah, Kentucky (visible from I-24, but I think that the one in Paducah has been taken down recently). However, the one in your photo is neither of those. It looks like it was taken out west somewhere, in a relatively flat, dry area, perhaps somewhere in Texas or Oklahoma. But that’s just a guess.
Also, I’ll just comment that I think these giant crosses are a great idea in concept, but it’s too bad that they made them so unbelievably utilitarian-looking and devoid of any beauty or aesthetic value. It looks like they are made out of cheap vinyl siding! 🙂
I vote for Effingham.
Cross that big. It must be Texas
Looks like a Texas sky, to me.
I 22nd Groom, TX.
Well, it ain’t San Diego, and Jimmy, I’m glad to see you pulled over to take the photo!
I’m almost 100% certain that you aren’t in Australia. lol
you are there….and wherever you go you will always be there….
