Get Out Of Purgatory Free!

Indulgenceaward_1

While surfing through some Evangelical Christian blogs, I noticed a curious award given to Phil Johnson’s PyroManiac. He had been awarded a "Get out of Purgatorio free!"-card, created in the image of Monopoly’s "Get out of jail free!"-cards. Since Evangelicals do not believe in purgatory, and since neither the person who awarded the card or the person who received it believe in purgatory, I assume that the donor of the card was awarding Johnson a free pass out of his own weblog that is named Purgatorio.

If anyone knows of a source of free passes out of Actual Purgatory, let me know. I know of some suffering souls who would be greatly appreciative of the donation.

  1. What’s the perfect gift for a soul in Purgatory?
    A Plenary Indulgence!
They’re not free, but they’re also not too hard to come by. The hardest part is that complete separation from venial sin.
Pick up a copy of the Handbook of Indulgences and you can start drawing them today.
Please read the fine print: All customers are limited to 1 and only 1 plenary indulgence per day. Indulgences may only be applied to the one perofrming the act or those who are in Purgatory. No other living souls need apply.

  2. Maybe the pass was to get out of reading Dante.
Terrible! I think Purgatorio was the best one 🙂

  3. Jimmy,
You are basically right about what the Award signifies… that is, a blog that helps get our minds heavenward. My PURGATORIO is a weblog that good naturedly (hopefully) documents Christian Culture and Sub Culture (Evangelical, Catholic, Pentacostal, etc.). Feel free to come on by anytime and throw you’re 2 cents in.

  4. For several years Randy Cassingham, who produces the free newsletter of weird news items, “This Is True”, has been selling Get Out of Hell Free cards, which have spread to GOOHF stickers, mugs, and T-shirts. http://www.thisistrue.com/ The free newsletter is fun and there is a version with more stories available to those who are willing to pay for it.

  5. Just to be fair to our host, we should also mention Jimmy’s “Primer on Indulgences”.
Oops! I’m glad you mentioned that, now I have some more good reading on Indulgences. 🙂

  6. Jimmy, you’re the apologist, but isn’t martyrdom a “get out of purgatory free card? Go directly to Heaven. Do not pass “Go” do not collect $200. 🙂
