Happy Universe Day!

Bigbang_3

Today–October 23rd–back in 4004 B.C., the universe was created.

At least according to the chronology created by Anglican Archbishop James Ussher.

You’ll find it printed in the center margin of many editions of the King James Bible.

Funny that it’s not found in Catholic Bibles.

In any event,

GET THE STORY.

Author: Jimmy Akin

Jimmy was born in Texas, grew up nominally Protestant, but at age 20 experienced a profound conversion to Christ. Planning on becoming a Protestant seminary professor, he started an intensive study of the Bible. But the more he immersed himself in Scripture the more he found to support the Catholic faith, and in 1992 he entered the Catholic Church. His conversion story, "A Triumph and a Tragedy," is published in Surprised by Truth. Besides being an author, Jimmy is the Senior Apologist at Catholic Answers, a contributing editor to Catholic Answers Magazine, and a weekly guest on "Catholic Answers Live."

  1. It is also Happy Mole Day!
“Celebrated annually on October 23 from 6:02 a.m. to 6:02 p.m., Mole Day commemorates Avogadro’s Number (6.02 x 10^23), which is a basic measuring unit in chemistry. Mole Day was created as a way to foster interest in chemistry. Schools throughout the United States and around the world celebrate Mole Day with various activities related to chemistry and/or moles.”

  3. The Douay-Rheims Bible w/ Haydock commentary has a chronology in it starting with creation 4004 BC. No exact day, though.

  4. It’s also fictional Archie Goodwin’s (Nero Wolfe’s private secretary and flunky) birthday (he supposedly was born on October 23, 1913. Drink a glass of milk for him.

  5. Those Protestants sure do like to nail things down don’t they?
Are you back then from the road trip?

  6. I don’t know if it’s accurate to say it’s in “many editions of the King James Bible.” I’m a lifelong Protestant, and I’ve never seen it or even heard it mentioned until I read this post.

  7. It tends to be left out in more recent editions of the King James, but in the editions that were common 50 or more years ago, it was often printed in them.

  8. It is also my understanding that during Ussher’s lifetime it was fairly universally accepted (Catholic or not). He was, after all, working on the best information available at the time.

  9. According to the Jewish calendar they are in year 5766. Maybe Ussher should have synchronized with them first.
I concur. If they were both right, it would now be a.d. 1762.

I concur. If they were both right, it would now be something like a.d. 1762.
