Republic Day!

Kimjongil_1Today, September 9th, is Republic Day in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), a.k.a., North Korea.

Why they would call it "Republic Day" when North Korea is a Stalinist dictatorship rather than a republic, I dunno, but their "Dear Leader" (left) is funny like that.

So . . . floral baskets all round, gang!

I’m sure that NK-NEWS.NET also has some interesting things you can read as part of the festivities.

Jimmy was born in Texas, grew up nominally Protestant, but at age 20 experienced a profound conversion to Christ. Planning on becoming a Protestant seminary professor, he started an intensive study of the Bible. But the more he immersed himself in Scripture the more he found to support the Catholic faith, and in 1992 he entered the Catholic Church. His conversion story, "A Triumph and a Tragedy," is published in Surprised by Truth. Besides being an author, Jimmy is the Senior Apologist at Catholic Answers, a contributing editor to Catholic Answers Magazine, and a weekly guest on "Catholic Answers Live."

  1. Ya gotta love the guy. After all he is –
“leader Kim Jong Il, supreme incarnation of noble morality and obligation.”
That makes today’s food ration extra special.

  3. Mr. Tim J. would be well advised to be minded of the agreed framework regarding commenting and will not be easily taken to ineffectual browbeating of the DPRK by repeating himself uselessly as if on a goat farm!

  4. That Kim Jong Il is one wacky guy! He looks like the winner of the Asian Elvis Impersonator contest.

  5. Okay…that’s the freakiest thing I ever saw…
And why call it a republic? Because it’s propaganda.

  6. I love that guy. If it wasn’t for the mass murder and nuclear bombs he would be kind of charming in a weird-little-foriegn-guy sort of way.
By the way, after a marathon three and a half weeks, I retired my blog yesterday and the “blog battle” about vows that I had with you guys won the “best blog battle” catagory. Check it out:

  7. Jimmy Akin will be treated in like fashion when slander of the dialogue partner is permitted like some bourgeois renegade!

  8. Okay quick, name one civilization in the entire annals of human history that is either A) Aethist B) Agnostic or C) Secular.
Time’s up! Okay, what do you have? Nothing! Why, that’s right. Not a single civilization comes to mind (that I know of). And if you look at the list of particularly advanced civilizations, you may notice something odd. Egypt, Greece, Rome, Tang dynasty China, Heian era Japan, Catholic Europe, Arabia … all these cultures are known by their gods as much as by their contributions to mankind.
The few times societies have experimented with godless systems of government has resulted in sick, inhuman, and (relatively) short-lived travesties like Kim Zhong Squarepants’ Kingdom of Giggles there.
Next time some punk, starts crying about the modern (Klan-inspired) interpretation of separation of church and state, please buy them a ticket to North Korea — where their ideals and dreams are realized in shocking stereophonic sound.

  9. I know this is not a goofy caption photo, but I could not resist:
“Oh! Is that my rubber DUCKIE I just sat on?”
    or…
Photographer: “That’s it, baby! Purse those lips! Yeah! Are you feeling RANDY?”

  10. I (barely) knew a guy who once went to North Korea on vacation. He was a marxist college professor who wanted to see this workers paridise. It was terrible of course, but he didn’t lose respect for his beloved marxism, he just blamed everything on us evil capitalists.

  11. Look closely at those spots on the side of his wrinkly head. Kim Zhong Il is a Trill just like Dax from DS9!! I wonder if he is a symbiote host for some other whacked out dictator from generations past…
