August 15, The Assumption of Mary

Assumption

Author: Jimmy Akin

Jimmy was born in Texas, grew up nominally Protestant, but at age 20 experienced a profound conversion to Christ. Planning on becoming a Protestant seminary professor, he started an intensive study of the Bible. But the more he immersed himself in Scripture the more he found to support the Catholic faith, and in 1992 he entered the Catholic Church. His conversion story, "A Triumph and a Tragedy," is published in Surprised by Truth. Besides being an author, Jimmy is the Senior Apologist at Catholic Answers, a contributing editor to Catholic Answers Magazine, and a weekly guest on "Catholic Answers Live."

  1. Hail, Holy Queen! Our Life! Our Sweetness! and Our Hope! To Thee do we cry, poor banished Children of Eve. To Thee do we send up our sighs, mornings and weepings in this Valley of Tears. Turn then, Most Gracious Advocate, Thine Eyes of Mercy towards us and after This, our exile, show unto us the Blessed Fruit of Thy Womb, JESUS! Oh Clement! O Loving! O Sweet Virgin Mary!

  2. I live in Perryville, MO where the National Shrine of the Miraculous Medal is located. Above the High Altar is a similar painting (freso?) modeled after one of the churches in Rome. If you get a chance to visit it is worth the drive/flight. Also check out our Cathedral/Basilica of St. Louis. It rivals many churches in Europe. It has more mosaics than any other building in the world.

  3. I have heard that the various Catholic rites do not celebrate Easter on the same Sunday of the year, but they all celebrate Our Lady’s Assumption on August 15th. Is there any truth to this?

  4. in the kindest manner I can say : )
Julia, amen!!! (and it should be mourning with a “u”)
Pray for us, please, most Holy and Blessed Mother of God that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

  5. I have always loved this painting of our Blessed Mother in her Assumption.
an interesting thought, looking at the cherubs and angels with her… that ONE angel killed 185,000 Assyrians (2 Kings 19.35)

  6. Hail, holy Queen enthroned above,
    O Maria.
Hail, Queen of mercy and of love,
    O Maria.
    Triumph, all ye cherubim,
    sing with us, ye seraphim,
heaven and earth resound the hymn:
    Salve, salve, salve Regina!

  7. I’m sad I wasn’t able to get to church today… even to stop in and say hi… but it’s kind of a relief to me. Things are just nuts right now with work (57 hrs/week) and going to school full time… I get paniced and upset when I can’t meet all my obligations. As much asthe Assumption means to me, and how great I feel when it comes around every year… I feel like… this year… God’s throwing me a bone.

  8. With respect to picking-up, “something,” clinging to the chalice, if I have a cold sore, or don’t feel particularly well, I give the cup a pass, and hope that others feeling likewise would do the same.
Greetings to all from New Brunswick, Canada.
    Boyd.
