Saddle Up!

VACANCY ON THE SUPREME COURT: O’CONNOR RETIRES.

Here we go, folks! The balloon’s going up!

Author: Jimmy Akin

Jimmy was born in Texas, grew up nominally Protestant, but at age 20 experienced a profound conversion to Christ. Planning on becoming a Protestant seminary professor, he started an intensive study of the Bible. But the more he immersed himself in Scripture the more he found to support the Catholic faith, and in 1992 he entered the Catholic Church. His conversion story, "A Triumph and a Tragedy," is published in Surprised by Truth. Besides being an author, Jimmy is the Senior Apologist at Catholic Answers, a contributing editor to Catholic Answers Magazine, and a weekly guest on "Catholic Answers Live."

  1. Hi Jeff,
Sorry, not yet. There are still five solid votes to uphold Roe.

  2. Forgive me for being a pessimist, but I just see this as another opportunity to appoint the wrong person. I’m not really convinced of George W. Bush’s opposition to abortion. But, hopefully I’m proven wrong.

  3. I pray for you in the US in the hope that the Supreme Court changes and I ardently ask you to pray for us here in Canada. Our evil Liberal Government forced the same sex marriage bill through Parliament. It was not a free vote. We have this aweful system of the dominant party voting the way the Prime Minister wants and not according to the consciences of the individual members of Parilament who represent the people. It is indeed a dark hour in our Country.

  4. Gloria in excelsis Deo!
I was really worried that Renquist would be the only retiree this term.
Father Pavone was right! He said there would be two this term.
Can you imagine how horrible this would be if Catholic Wonderboy™ was elected? (You don’t need to imagine, just look at Canada)

  5. Actually, the vote on gay marriage WAS a fairly free vote. Only cabinet ministers were ordered to support it. Like it or not, the result was arrived at in a democratic way. I think thirty Liberals voted against it, and one gave up his cabinet post to do so.
Anyone who thinks that the majority of the Canadian population opposes gay marriage and the bill would have been defeated in a perfect reflection of society’s will is dreaming. It’s probably close, but most people don’t care one way or the other. The word ‘marriage’ probably would have been taken out and ‘civil unions’ used instead, but otherwise I think things would be exactly the same.

  6. Yes, Fr Pavone was correct, so far. Bill Kristol was right, too, when he said on 06/22 that O’Connor would resign before Rehnquist. Southern Appeal reminds us of that today in a couple of links. And we still may get a Rehnquist announcement before the next term.
“Catholic Wonderboy™” LOL, BillyHW! Yes, my stomach churns at the thought.

  7. Bush’s substantial committment to pro-life is substantially solid. The problem presidents face here is really their total lack of understanding as to how judicial philosophy works. No wonder they are, 9 times out of 10 “disappointed” by their appointments.

  8. Thanks Allen for the clarification. I’ve been travelling and did not know the secifics. You are very likely correct. All the more sad.

  9. Allen, you forget how the Liberals disgracefully used the courts and the media to manipulate the Canadian people into something they didn’t want.

  10. May God’s will be done in the selection process.
a reminder to all: Pro-Life does not end at birth!

  11. Tim M: I know of no human being whatsoever who has ever maintained that it does.
Those who suggest the contrary generally seem to be speaking in code for some kind of broader agenda.
If you have a broader agenda, fine, but be explicit about it. Otherwise, one won’t know what you’re talking about and may resent the implication that one is not pro-life unless one is willing to sign on to a broader and undefined agenda beyond actually, y’know, not killing innocent people.

  12. a reminder to all: Pro-Life does not end at birth!
What on earth is that supposed to mean?

  13. It’d be nice to get someone who embraces fully the natural law. But I’m not holding my breath.

  14. Matt,
The Constitution doesn’t mention so-called natural law. A justice who upheld the constitution would be a big improvement.

  15. All heck’s gonna break loose in Washington. Get ready to watch the fireworks. The TV talking heads are going to have a hay day. It would be amazingly symbolic for the president to nominate a pro-life judge to the supreme court on the fourth of july.

  16. God rises in the divine council, gives judgment in the midst of the gods.
“How long will you judge unjustly and favor the cause of the wicked? Selah
Defend the lowly and fatherless; render justice to the afflicted and needy.
Rescue the lowly and poor; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.”
The gods neither know nor understand, wandering about in darkness, and all the world’s foundations shake.
I declare: “Gods though you be, offspring of the Most High all of you,
Yet like any mortal you shall die; like any prince you shall fall.”
Arise, O God, judge the earth, for yours are all the nations.
