James Doohan, RIP

ScottyActor James Doohan, best known for his role as "Scotty" on the original Star Trek, has died.

He was 85.

GET THE STORY.

Author: Jimmy Akin

Jimmy was born in Texas, grew up nominally Protestant, but at age 20 experienced a profound conversion to Christ. Planning on becoming a Protestant seminary professor, he started an intensive study of the Bible. But the more he immersed himself in Scripture the more he found to support the Catholic faith, and in 1992 he entered the Catholic Church. His conversion story, "A Triumph and a Tragedy," is published in Surprised by Truth. Besides being an author, Jimmy is the Senior Apologist at Catholic Answers, a contributing editor to Catholic Answers Magazine, and a weekly guest on "Catholic Answers Live."

  1. I remember when my brothers used to watch the show and I wasn’t much of a sci-fi fan, being a little girl and all–I would figure out who I would want to marry–Captain Kirk, Chekov or Scotty. I liked the fact that Scotty had a lot of power over the Enterprise, being the engineer and I loved his accent–so he was my choice.

  2. CNN is reporting today that part of he is going to be cremated and part of his ashes launched into space.

  3. “I just learned that he was a Canadian soldier at D-day.
    Artillery, IIRC.”
Yes he was. He was shot seven times on Juno Beach (including losing the middle finger on one hand) and after he recovered he trained as a pilot and was a forward observer for the artillery and earned a reputation as “the craziest pilot in the air force”.

I just read a posting by his co-author S.M. Stirling (The “Flight Engineer” series) that said about the same. Apparently, Jimmy went in ahead of the first wave to remove obstacles, and was shot by a German machine gunner.
