Okay! The link to GiantMicrobes.Com is too amazing to pass up!
For those who missed it, yesterday Tim J. was telling about a bug that’s recently had him severely under the weather. (Muchos sympathies to Tim J.!)
There’s been something similar going around the Catholic Answers offices (as Michelle mentioned), only it seems to be a cough-inducing virus that goes into folks lungs and stays there for weeks and weeks and weeks. (Mercifully, I have not caught it.)
Then in the combox a helpful reader pointed to the amazing site GiantMicrobes.Com! As they explain on the site:
We make stuffed animals that look like tiny microbes—only a million times actual size! Now available: The Common Cold, The Flu, Sore Throat, Stomach Ache, Cough, Ear Ache, Bad Breath, Kissing Disease, Athlete’s Foot, Ulcer, Martian Life, Beer & Bread, Black Death, Ebola, Flesh Eating, Sleeping Sickness, Dust Mite, Bed Bug, and Bookworm (and in our Professional line: H.I.V. and Hepatitis).
Each 5-to-7 inch doll is accompanied by an image of the real microbe it represents, as well as information about the microbe.
They make great learning tools for parents and educators, as well as amusing gifts for anyone with a sense of humor!
They’re also serious about making the plush toys look like (well, kinda like) the offending real-world critters.
They’re the perfect thing to help Mr. Monk get over his germophobia!
Note also that they have a "Martian Life" plush toy based on the alleged fossils of Martian life in that meteor they found in Antartica.
(Warning also that a few of the diseases are scary or unmentionable.)
Very amusing. Can we change that second misspelling of “Martian” please?
Didn’t they make a Star Trek apsiode about these guys? They called tribbles back then….;-)
I wonder if my boss would ‘get it’ if I gave him the bad breath one…
Those are quite cool.
I just wish they stayed away from the microbes that are nothing more than cylinders (the entire Health category, for instance).

The bed bug is almost cute, but I wouldn’t want something like that in my child’s bed.
In a way, these are scarier than the stuffed Cthulhu because he’s not real, while these microbes are real – and some are deadly!
In Jesu et Maria,
My favorite is beer & bread yeast! He’s got little horns, kinda. A steal for 6 bucks!
And who knew bookworms were that . . . ugly? Yeeeeh!
I got a bookworm for my birthday from an old friend. I think it’s sweet and adorable. Most of my friends would beg to differ.
Neato! I much prefer these stuffed plushies to the real thing.
I am looking at buying the Yeast plushie (I dabble in homebrew fromm time to time) and also the Giardia (would make a great visual aid for when I talk to Boy Scouts about why we always, always, ALWAYS boil water before drinking!).
My 10 y.o. found “Giardia” fetching, so we now have one in amongst her extensive stuffed toy collection. Silly, but kinda cute actually. I wish I’d thought of it!
I have found them a bit cheaper at this toy site. If you are buying for a lot of friends this christmas, it is worth the savings. The Pox is still my favorite.
