31

Author: Jimmy Akin

Jimmy was born in Texas, grew up nominally Protestant, but at age 20 experienced a profound conversion to Christ. Planning on becoming a Protestant seminary professor, he started an intensive study of the Bible. But the more he immersed himself in Scripture the more he found to support the Catholic faith, and in 1992 he entered the Catholic Church. His conversion story, "A Triumph and a Tragedy," is published in Surprised by Truth. Besides being an author, Jimmy is the Senior Apologist at Catholic Answers, a contributing editor to Catholic Answers Magazine, and a weekly guest on "Catholic Answers Live."

  1. This isn’t another Freaky Friday post, is it? 😉
Jimmy, is there a reason for the counting of days of Benedict XVI’s pontificate, other than for the sheer joy of it, like the Count on Sesame Street? (“Thirty-one! Ha! Ha! Ha! Thirty-one days of his reign! HA! HA! HA!”) Or are you marking significant events? Whichever it is, it’s a lot of fun. Thanks for the humor!

  2. Tomorrow, March 21, is the Feast of the Death of St. Benedict of Nursia who died in A.D. 547.
Remember to invoke the intercession of St. Benedict for Pope Benedict XVI tomorrow!

  3. Fr. S., did you mean May 21?
Anyway, I was hoping Jimmy was somehow counting down to my birthday (today), but it looks like that’s not the case.

  4. 31 days ’till the revealing of Secret Project #2!!!
    Gloria in excelsis Deo!

  5. Brad, the 21st of March (not of May) is the “Transitus” (passing or death) day of St. Benedict.
Today, is the memorial of St. Bernardine of Siena, through whose intercession I pray you receive birthday blessings.
If today is “31” … well … Wednesday the 20th of May (the day AFTER the election of Pope Benedict XVI) was “1.” That leads me to conclude that I don’t know what Jimmy is counting from or to.

  6. Oh, I get it. When I read your comment, I just didn’t see the connection to March 21. I did know of St. Bernardine’s memorial, since it’s on my birthday (and also since I’ve taken up praying the Divine Office).
Many thanks to you and all my well-wishers. 🙂

  7. Maybe the day of the Pope’s election was 0, not 1, in Jimmy’s counting. Which would make sense, since on the day after the Pope was elected he had been Pope for 1 day, so now he’s been Pope for 31 days.

  8. You’re counting to 34 days, which means that Benedict’s pontificate will be longer than John Paul I’s.

  9. No clue what Jimmy is talking about. I thought mabye it was his birthday or something….’cept he’s WAY older than 31. So I have no idea.

  10. I’m still in my 30s, so I don’t know how much way older than 31 I am.
