The Passing of John Paul II

Here at Catholic Answers we’re getting reports that the pope has indeed passed.

Still trying to verify this from other sources.

If you have any, please leave them in the combox.

Either way, let’s pray for his soul and for the Church.

Author: Jimmy Akin

Jimmy was born in Texas, grew up nominally Protestant, but at age 20 experienced a profound conversion to Christ. Planning on becoming a Protestant seminary professor, he started an intensive study of the Bible. But the more he immersed himself in Scripture the more he found to support the Catholic faith, and in 1992 he entered the Catholic Church. His conversion story, "A Triumph and a Tragedy," is published in Surprised by Truth. Besides being an author, Jimmy is the Senior Apologist at Catholic Answers, a contributing editor to Catholic Answers Magazine, and a weekly guest on "Catholic Answers Live."

  1. FWIW, CNN.com briefly had a banner announcing that Italian news media were reporting this and that CNN was trying to confirm it, but they took it down several minutes ago without further comment. ***COULD*** mean that they DISconfirmed it??

  2. cnn.com has an update that reads: AP: The Vatican denies reports in Italian media that Pope John Paul II has died.
    It doesn’t have anything further.

  3. Is it not fitting that this great peope should die before or on the feast of Divine Mercy?

“The clinical picture indicates cardio-circulatory and renal insufficiency. The biological parameters are notably compromised. The Holy Father, WITH VISIBLE PARTICIPATION, is joining the continual prayers of those assisting him.”

  5. A link with a complimentarary explanation of the process after a pope’s death. Includes some glossary items which are very helpful.

    It’s official.
Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen.
May his soul and all the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
    In Jesu et Maria,

  7. Out of the depths I call to you, LORD;
Lord, hear my cry! May your ears be attentive to my cry for mercy.
If you, LORD, mark our sins, Lord, who can stand?
But with you is forgiveness and so you are revered.
I wait with longing for the LORD, my soul waits for his word.
My soul looks for the Lord more than sentinels for daybreak. More than sentinels for daybreak,
let Israel look for the LORD, For with the LORD is kindness, with him is full redemption,
And God will redeem Israel from all their sins.
