Vatican Official Again Weighs In On Terri Shiavo

Though there may be doubt on where some churchmen are on the Terri Shiavo issue, the head of the Vatican’s Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace has spoken.

GET THE STORY.

Excerpt from Cardinal Martino:

She will die a horrible and cruel death. She will not simply die; she will have death inflicted upon her over a number of terrible days even weeks . . . how is it that this woman, who has done nothing wrong, will suffer a fate which society would never tolerate in the case of a convicted murderer or anyone else convicted of the most horrendous crimes?

Author: Jimmy Akin

Jimmy was born in Texas, grew up nominally Protestant, but at age 20 experienced a profound conversion to Christ. Planning on becoming a Protestant seminary professor, he started an intensive study of the Bible. But the more he immersed himself in Scripture the more he found to support the Catholic faith, and in 1992 he entered the Catholic Church. His conversion story, "A Triumph and a Tragedy," is published in Surprised by Truth. Besides being an author, Jimmy is the Senior Apologist at Catholic Answers, a contributing editor to Catholic Answers Magazine, and a weekly guest on "Catholic Answers Live."

  1. “Now, if we can only get the bishops here in Florida to say something…”
And the Holy Father, for that matter.

  2. The Holy Father need not say anything. Just the image of him as he is, is a rebuke to the Judge Greers of the world…

  3. I just received an email about Terri’s forthcoming, ‘painless’ death;
    And I quote:
“This “Exit Protocol” is a recipe for how to kill someone by starvation and dehydration, and then manage their symptoms while they slowly die.
For instance, the nurses will put lip balm on Terri because her lips will crack, peel, and bleed from the dehydration.
They’ll use body lotion because Terri’s skin will begin to break down and show signs of flaking, drying, cracking, or being parched.
They’ll put a “scopolamine patch” behind her ear to enhance the drying up of saliva and other secretions.
“Chux pads” will need to be used—and changed quite often because of incontinence of Terri’s bowels and bladder.
When Terri begins to writhe in pain (multifocal myoclonus) and she becomes agitated from metabolic changes and electrolyte imbalances due to no fluids or nutrition, the attending staff will have to give her 5 to 10 mg of Valium (diazepam)—rectally—every 4 hours.
If Terri experiences a Grand Mal seizure, they’ll give her 15 mg of Valium immediately, and then as needed thereafter.
When her body shows signs of an inability to breathe by gasping for air (dyspnea), they will immediately give Terri 2 to 4 mg of morphine every 4 hours.
And all of this will go on for 7 to 10 days… ”

    Lord, have Mercy!
    God Bless.

  4. If this act of murder is allowed to proceed, we can rest assured that those responsible for this decision, and also those who carry out this horrible inhumane procedure, will receive their appropriate reward from our great and just creator. or….Perhaps someday, they will be in the same predicament as Terri. The terrifying thing is that this will set a precedence for the rest of us. Does “Hitler” ring a bell?

  5. What’s next? Should we give lethal injections to elderly people in rest homes… how about people with alzheimers, kill them when they don’t recognize anyone?…what about people who have severe mental problems? Where does it stop? This just shows how our moral values have gone right down the toilet.

  7. Let’s all pray a novena for Terri Schiavo. She needs a miracle at this point. I know that if it is the Lord’s will, she could wake up at any moment. Would they then take more aggressive measures to end her life? What is this world coming to?

  8. Terri doesn’t need a miracle, she needs peace. What you call life, isn’t. Sometimes nature is cruel. Let her go. 15 years is long enough. Your religion won’t stop whats coming to Terri. Your God would prolong her suffering? Mine wouldn’t. If the government intervenes in this, its the beginning of the end of our country. You WANT your government to decide when enough is enough? Think about what you’re asking for. You may not be scared, if you think you won’t be here, but think about this….. your children will be.

  9. Michael Shiavo appeared on a Larry King re-run tonright, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen a bigger scumbag in all my years. He refuses to take a lie detector, his story about Terri’s collapse in 1990 was not credible, given the excuse he felt he needed to offer; “bolemia”. No, there is definately more to this story. I feel it, my wife feels it, and we just looked at eachother after viewing the mustachioed bag of garbage. If it were my sister or daughter that was being taken away by this animal, he’d have major major trouble on his hands both legally, and otherwise.

  10. I think anyone involved in the removal of Terri’s feeding tube should have to go without food or water until she passes or a decision is made to reinsert the tube. This is total torture to any living being. If a dog were in this state we would euthanize them. So…. could Terri be euthnized. No of couse not this would be murder. WAKE UP ALL YOU IDIOTS OUT THERE, so is starving the woman!!!!!!

  11. The Terri Shiavo case is a clear cut situation
of Mysogyny. So many men ruling on this woman’s
live. I am disappointed in the feminist point of
view and their inability to speak out for Terri.

  13. I am so heartsick that they could do this to someone. Thou shalt not kill comes with no fineprint. We have advanced so much as a society that we have the technology to keep someone alive when they are in this state, we have, therefore, an obligation to make a decision on this issue. I didn’t think we killed people in our society. Especially not people who can’t fight back. People who need help. Does this mean that if someone loses the ability to move their hands to their mouth and feed themselves, they should also die of “natural causes?” It is ridiculous. I pray for Terri and her family. People are alive until they are dead and no amount of law is going to change that.
