Gotta question for y’all: I’m unhappy with the ID3 tags that are being stuck onto my MP3 files when I make homemade audiobooks. I wanna change them, but my iTunes doesn’t seem to want to do it for me (although it says it should be able to).
I also would like to avoid having to change each tag in each field manually. I’d like (ideally) to be able to batch change them (since I now have a large number of these files), though that’s not a requirement.
I’ve done some checking but haven’t found what I’m looking for.
Can any of y’all recommend programs that would be (a) free or cheap, (b) if cheap, purchaseable with PayPal maybe, (c) easy to use to do this, and most importantly (d) contains no spyware–oh yeah, and (e) runs on Windows XP?
Much obliged!
Might this work? http://home.wanadoo.nl/squell/id3.html It was the first result in a search for “id3” on freshmeat.net . It seems to match your requirements, and I’ve gotten the impression that a command-line tool wouldn’t faze you…
Try MP3TAG. It’s free, contains no spyware, and is pretty flexible concerning the info you want included in the tag.

From iTunes 4 Help:
“To change the format of the song information tags:
“Select the songs you want to convert. Then choose Advanced > Convert ID3 Tags. You can choose a version of ID3, and you can translate the character set to other formats.”
and
“Song titles look scrambled after converting ID3 tags
“Some applications do not translate Unicode characters correctly, resulting in garbled song titles when you convert the ID3 tags. If your song information became garbled after converting the song’s ID3 tags, you can change the song title back to the title it had previously.
“1.Select the song and choose Advanced > Convert ID3 Tags.
“To select multiple adjacent songs, press the Shift key while you click the song titles. To select multiple songs that are not adjacent, press the Command key and click.
“2. Click Translate Text Characters, then choose Reverse Unicode.”
Jimmy,
I highly reccomend
http://www.mediamonkey.com
while it is an all around solution for mp3s, they have some great mp3 tag editing bits in there.
It’s free, fast, and fun.
