  1. Hi Jimmy,

    I just want to make known a wonderful display in one of the big shopping malls in secular/Buddhist Hong Kong.

    They have constructed a large lifesize Nativity scene, and another scene showing Mary, Joseph and Jesus looking for a place to stay. And on the ceilings, you have angels carrying a banner saying ‘Glory to God in the highest and goodwill toward men’

    In addition, performances are definitely Christian in content, especially those on the 24th and 25th.

    If you look beyond the veneer, it’s still commercially driven, and one feels the ‘true spirit of Christmas’ is also lost on them, but it’s still good enough!

  2. Er, Jimmy, what time did you post this? The timestamp on the RSS feed posting is 2:07 AM EST on the *26th*.

    I know you’re on the West Coast, but wasn’t this still a bit late to be reminding people of their Christmas Day obligation?

  3. Er, you’re right. It was a little late to be reminding people of that.

    I checked and discovered that the publish time had been incorrectly entered into the database. (As I’ve mentioned, I normally blog in advance so that I can have things go up on a more regular schedule during the day rather than have everything show up in the evening when I’m at home.) It was supposed to go up *much* earlier in the day than it did.

    Originally it was supposed to go up at 12:01 AM (Pacific) on the 25th (I try to schedule a post for 12:01 AM my time so that it’ll be there when the folks on the East Coast wake up), but it apparently this one went up at 11:07 PM (Pacific) on the 25th. Not much chance of getting to Mass at that late hour of the evening.

  5. Well, no harm on my account Jimmy — I actually went to Mass *twice*, for Midnight (sang in the choir) and at 11 AM. 🙂 Got to hear two different sets of readings. And of course the morning Mass reading was John 1, which is the “Last Gospel” in the Tridentine Mass. I’m starting to appreciate why they do that in the TM. Since we don’t do that in the Novus Ordo, I think I may make an effort on my own to commit that passage to memory. (Hey, perhaps you could blog about this?)

  8. Of course, in the Tridentine liturgy, the Last Gospel for the third Mass of Christmas is not from John 1, because that’s actually the Gospel reading for that Mass. Instead, the Last Gospel comes from Matt. 1 or Matt. 2, if I recall correctly. (Somebody help me out here.)
