YEAH!
Denver Archbishop Charles Chaput ROCKS!
According to CNA:
Archbishop Charles Chaput of Denver has urged his faithful to "scrub" the expression "Happy Holidays" from Catholic vocabulary.
"We
don’t celebrate a generic excuse for gift-giving," he wrote in his
latest column, published in the Denver Catholic Register. "We celebrate
the birth of Jesus Christ."
"For the vast majority of Americans,
Christmas has a distinctly religious, Christian identity rooted in
Scripture. Publicly ignoring this fact is not a form of ‘inclusion’ or
‘tolerance.’ On the contrary, it’s a deliberate act of intolerance and
exclusion against Christians," he wrote.
He
said lumping Christmas together with seasonal celebrations devalues and
marginalizes the sacred nature of Christmas, and reduces Christian
influence in society.
"No other religious community would be
subjected to this kind of treatment – and remember, American Christians
are in the majority," he said.
I cringe every time I hear “Season’s Greetings”. What on earth is that?
I like saying, “Happy Holy Days” or “Merry Christ’s Mass”. It tends to provoke thought where there once was none.
Maybe Chaput can speak out against “BCE” and “CE” while he’s at it.
The other day I saw a book on Jesus written by an author who teaches at a catholic university and published by an “evangelical” publisher (Eerdmans) which used these terms.
I remember one of my Catholic high school religion teachers forced us to use C.E. and B.C.E. because we didn’t want offend or be intolerant and bigoted to all those Jews/Muslims/Pagans/Whatever.
A high school English teacher wouldn’t even let me use “mankind”.
Thankfully, I took mathematics in univerisity. No politics in mathematics.
I was in Philadelphia this weekend and in a market where a Mennonite group were running a restaurant. They had some quotations between the menus.
One was a sign saying, “Jesus is the reason for the season.” Below it, with holly to either side, “Happy Holidays.”
