Why don’t we avoid the stress of bitter elections like this in the future by having either the red states or the blue states secede from the union?

Speaking as a red-county guy in a supposedly “blue” state (Michigan):

Basically, if you drove up I-75 from southern Wayne County to Saginaw with both doors open, you’d end up smacking most of Kerry’s electoral base in Michigan.
We’d have to give up “from sea to shining sea”…
