Being out of power nationally can give one an appreciation for the value of states rights.
It is argued that this is something the blue states are starting to become aware of.
But could deciding to stay out of each others’ hair and let the states do what they want on a larger range of issues without interference from the federal government?

You remember the "Where’s the beef?" campaign by Wendy’s hamburger chain, lo these many years ago?
It featured octagenarian ordinary woman Clara Peller insistently asking "Where’s the beef?" when presented with various burgers that had tiny hamburger patties and oversized buns.
The implication was that Wendy’s had the biggest burgers around.
They didn’t.
Rival chain Hardee’s did.
I know this because one of my college roommates worked for Hardee’s, andhe was incredibly frustrated by the fact that Hardee’s didn’t seize the day and produce a rival "Here’s the beef!" campaign. Instead, they stuck with their boring "Real food for real people" campaign.
Well, Hardee’s is up to it again.
They’ve now released the "Monster Thickburger":
The Hardee’s fast food chain has rolled out its new 1,400-calorie Monster Thickburger, with 107 grams of fat.
The sandwich boasts two one-third-pound
beef patties, four strips of bacon, three slices of cheese, topped with
mayonnaise on a buttered sesame seed bun [SOURCE].
BODACIOUS!
Hold the bun on mine.
Still no word on the "Here’s the beef!" campaign.

Now that Disney drove off Pixar with their heavy-handed negotiating tactics, they have decided to exercise their right to make additional sequels in the Toy Story series. Pixar will not be involved.
My money is that it won’t live up to its two precedessors. Steve Greydanus and I have discussed the intrinsic difficulties in making a third film that would live up to the first two, and it’s not clear that the characters have within them another story as powerful as the two they’ve already given us (though I have an idea for one that might come close). Without Pixar in the picture, I don’t have confidence in Disney’s ability to come remotely close.
The grilled cheese sandwich is up for sale again.eBay user Diana Duyser offered for sale a half of a cheese sandwich that appears to have the face of a woman on it. Bidding for the sandwich, which Duyser claims she has kept for ten years, reached $22,000.
Then Duyser got a note from eBay saying that they had taken the offer down on the grounds that it violates their rules to post offers that are jokes.
But Duyser wasn’t joking.
The sandwich is back up.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Sen. Harry Reid of
Nevada won election as leader of the shrunken Democratic minority on
Tuesday and said he stands ready to cooperate with Republicans or
confront them as he deems necessary.
With the exception of abortion rights and gun control, both of which he
opposes, Reid’s recent voting record on major issues puts him in the
mainstream of Senate Democrats [SOURCE].
Confirmation of Reid’s pro-life votes (and his stance on other issues) HERE.
This could make things interesting. It could be a sea change in party. If this isn’t a fluke and the Dems are really ready to let pro-lifers into leadership positions then the party might stop serving as the outer garment of the abortion industry.
Will be interesting to see what, if anything, happens on this front.

Almost three months ago, I blogged on this site complaining that the Democrats needed to stop stonewalling pro-lifers in their own ranks.
Now it looks like they may actually be starting to do so.
According to this CNN.com story, the shrunken Democrat minority, having lost its leader Tom Daschle, has done something that would have seemed unthinkable only a few weeks ago: They’ve elected a pro-life Democrat to be their leader.
Sen. Harry Reid of Nevada replaces Daschle as the new minority leader. According to CNN.com,
With the exception of abortion rights and gun control, both of which he opposes, Reid’s recent voting record on major issues puts him in the mainstream of Senate Democrats.
Assuming Reid’s pro-life credentials hold up, this is incredible news — a sign, perhaps, that Democrats are beginning to realize that unless they start reaching out to pro-lifers they’re going to continue to be the party out of power.
This leaves me with one question for pro-lifers who voted for Kerry.
Suppose that there had been enough pro-lifers willing to regard abortion as negotiable and vote for Kerry over Bush to actually get Kerry elected. Had that happened, do you think there’s any way we could possibly hope to be seeing signs now of the Dems beginning to crack on abortion?
