FLASH! Like Americans, Ancient Egyptians Also Spent Too Much On Their Pets!

Bast_1Big surprise.

After all, they had a cat goddess (Bast) and all.

I think I also read somewhere that the built the world’s biggest tombs or something like that.

GET THE STORY.

Author: Jimmy Akin

Jimmy was born in Texas, grew up nominally Protestant, but at age 20 experienced a profound conversion to Christ. Planning on becoming a Protestant seminary professor, he started an intensive study of the Bible. But the more he immersed himself in Scripture the more he found to support the Catholic faith, and in 1992 he entered the Catholic Church. His conversion story, "A Triumph and a Tragedy," is published in Surprised by Truth. Besides being an author, Jimmy is the Senior Apologist at Catholic Answers, a contributing editor to Catholic Answers Magazine, and a weekly guest on "Catholic Answers Live."

  1. How much is “too much” to spend on a cat? One of mine was diagnosed with diabetes. Just today I learned that human insulin isn’t working so I’m going to try cow insulin, which is $78 per bottle. I don’t feel like I should just let K’Ehleyr wither away and die. I think an organ transplant or chemotherapy would be crossing the line for a pet. But daily medecine? At what point is the cost too high? I’d really like some advice.

  2. First off would be to enter into prayer over this issue. God will guide us in all things.
Off the top of my head I think questions to ask yourself are: Am I managing God’s money as he wills? Has God called me to tithe a Biblical 10% of my income? If he has and you are tithing as he wants then I would say you are free to spend your money on your kitty as you see fit.

  3. I would issue a caution, here. Tithing was mandated by the Old Law, but it is not the Church’s understanding that it is mandated under the New Law, which applies to Christians. There is no mandate for Christians to give 10% or more of their income, though this is certainly a good thing ot do.

  4. Understood Jimmy!
That’s why I didn’t say she MUST give 10%. But that she ought to enter into prayer over the whole issue of money.

  5. My goal used to be to make sure I give more to the Church than I spend at Home Depot each month. I think I’ll re-adjust this and make sure I tithe more than I spend on the kitties. Thanks!

  6. I like that!
And how ironic, I’m about 45 minutes away from leaving for Home Depot! I have to rent a power compactor for crushed rock. I’m putting in a paver patio.

  7. Jimmy I have a question.
Since the chuch does not mandate tithing why does every Catholic church I’ve been in always speak of moving our tithing toward the 10% mark. If this is not a Christian obligation then why even use a % figure. It would seem to tie us to the old law rather than the new.
