Good News For Catholics Trying To Conceive

Here’s an article by Matt Abbott on a new method seeking to help couples who are having difficulty conceiving.

The new method is billed as strictly in conformity with Catholic moral teaching (whereas so many fertility therapies are not).

Let’s hope it is as advertised and that it helps many couples end the heartbreak of infertility!

  1. Got a little chuckle about the article’s praise for the ‘Pope Paul IV’ foundation. Reminds me of John Kerry’s oath to Pope Piux XXIII.

  2. Thanks for the link, Jimmy; I’ve forwarded it to my daughter, who’s only 25 and has been trying to conceive for two years now. (She did get pregnant once, but miscarried at 4 weeks, sadly.) As you can imagine she’s badly frustrated and is sorely tempted by IVF, so I’m glad to have heard about this.

  3. Pope Paul VI, not IV – you know, the Humanae Vitae guy?
I was at that conference in Omaha – it was truly awesome. And any one having trouble conceiving or carrying to term might consider buying the textbook as a ‘gift’ for their personal physician. It is around $200 for 1200 + pages packed with detailed information.

  4. But what does this do for male-based fertility problems, which are half the story? It’s implicit in Hillgers’ pronouncements that I’ve seen over the years that infertility is due to defects in the woman. And why do none of the articles about NaPro (including a recent one in the journal of the Fellowship of Catholic Scholars) ever attempt to summarize what these fabulous treatments are? I gather they have something to do with normalizing hormone levels.

  5. Just wanted to make a helpful comment here. My daughter and her husband were beginning to give up hope of having a family – she kept miscarrying early on. The local “fertility center” of course wanted to put them on the immoral path of no return – even though the problem was not of conceiving but of carrying to term. Thank God she found a doctor up on the latest – she had elevated ANA levels – something that causes no problems in everyday life but can cause miscarriages. As soon as my daughter suspects she is pregnant she is put on heparin for the duration – we now have 2 beautiful grandchildren and more to come I’m sure.
