You remember when al-Qa’eda attacked Spanish rail lines just before and their recent national election and caused the incumbent party to lose power for its support of the U.S.-led War on Terror.
Now the consequences of that loss of nerve by the Spanish public are coming home to roost.
The way things work in countries with a parliamentary system of governance (like Spain) is that whichever part is in charge of the government basically runs the show and is able to enact sweeping changes in the law, to which opposition parties can put up far less resistance than the opposition party typically can in the U.S. Congress.
Now that the socialists are in power in Spain, they are conducting a thoroughgoing political campaign to restructure major Spanish social institutions. The changes are so sweeping that Spain’s leading churchman, Cardinal Antonio MarĂa Rouco, has accused the new government of taking Spain back to Moorish times, when Muslims ruled the country.
It’s a sad story.
“Spain’s Roman Catholic establishment has also been upset by the government’s announcement that it will legalise gay marriage at the beginning of next year. Common law marriages are also set to be recognised.
The socialists are also planning to relax Spain’s rules on abortion, where women must find a doctor prepared to say that they will suffer physical or psychological damage if they do not abort.
In a further blow to the church’s power over the political establishment, the government is also encouraging stem-cell research with human embryos, something that Mr Aznar’s government had also banned.”
Ain’t Socialism grand?
One of the first thing Zapatero did after coming into office was to promise gay marriage. Not punish the terrorists. But legalize gay marriage.
I’m sure that’ll appease the Islamosfascists.
Isn’t Islam suppose to be anti-gay and anti abortion?
If only we still has the Spanish Inquisition . . .
Seriously, was General Franco’s regime really so bad, or is it’s “terribleness” exagerrated by liberals? H seems to have been on good terms with the Church.
Bad things man, bad things.
1. If only 18% of Spaniards are practising, it seems reasonable to reduce gov’t relations with the Church. If the population wishes to be secular, then secular they shall be…with all the unintended consequences the law will allow!
2. Compulsory religious study = Facism. I love the objective media, don’t you?
3. Back to that 18% number. I actually feel much better now. I am always hammered by non-Catholics about the behaviors of “Catholic Spain” and “all those Catholics in Spain” which are decidedly non-catholic in many ways. Now I can say…hey all that immoral and amoral stuff is Protestant/secular stuff. Ha!
This phenomenon of Islamic-Leftist alliance has been observed before:
They, after all, have a “common enemy,” so it shouldn’t be such a big surprise.
A similar relationship exists in the Philippines. The Leftist rebel group New People’s Army (NPA) has often called for a tactical alliance between them and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), and I think this has actually taken place already since I’ve heard some reports that NPA rebels in Mindanao already have access to rocket-propelled grenades, which are often associated with the muslim group.
If only we still has the Spanish Inquisition . . .

Eric, as an American with very close ties to Spain, your glib comment about Franco “not being that bad” is an insult to the thousands of people who were disappeared, tortured, and executed by a hitler allied remnant of fascism, not to mention the millions of americans that died in WWII to rid the world of this abhorent ideology. The fact that he was allied to the Catholic Church is actually a sad commentary on the church’s willingness to ally themselves with monsters in the name of self preservation…..I suggest you reread your history books….
