Startling honesty from the Telegraph.
EXCERPTS:
Having an abortion almost doubles a woman’s risk of
giving birth dangerously early in a later pregnancy, according to
research that will provoke fresh debate over the most controversial of
all medical procedures.
A
French study of 2,837 births – the first to investigate the link
between terminations and extremely premature births – found that
mothers who had previously had an abortion were 1.7 times more likely
to give birth to a baby at less than 28 weeks’ gestation. Many babies
born this early die soon after birth, and a large number who survive
suffer serious disability.

This is a really important study, and I certainly believe in the problem. But since I usually throw cold water on medical studies, I’ll throw some on this one, too.
Anyone who is willing to abort a baby probably already has some issues mentally (depression, anxiety, whatever), even if it was the situation and the people around her who gave her these problems. Also, if the mother has financial problems, she may have physical problems which have gone untreated. When you put this together with post-abortion depression, it might well make having the next baby harder all by itself.
I do believe it’s more likely that much of the problem is caused by abortionists having very low quality control and being the sort of doctors (or not even doctors, in Vermont) who don’t have the skills to get hired for anything more socially redeeming, and who probably grow more depressed, calloused, and nasty every day under the pressure of their “work”. Also, it’s likely that abortions are intrinsically destructive and nasty operations that permanently hurt the health of the mother as well as being slightly fatal to the baby.
But it’s only fair to note the other bad factors.
I think that this study needs to be repeated around the world, particularly here in the US. It will ensure the accuracy of the study and that the issues transcends some local issue.
The first thing that came to my mind was how much of a difference it would make in the opinion of someone considering an abortion. Are they really that long-term minded? From what I understand, they tend to be very short term focused which is why so few are willing to consider adoption. They just want the problem taken care of and fast!
I don’t know that anyone in that state of mind is going to be too affected by the long term implications of that decision.
Then, in addition to Maureen’s concern for the accuracy, what is missing is the percentage of women who have pre-term births. If 0.01% of women do and I double (gasp!) that to 0.02%, it’s not a very big issue in reality, is it? I don’t think the numbers are that low, but used them for demonstrative purposes.
Why do we have to bring common sense into this? Abortion-Breast Cancer link, and now this. What we theocrats won’t try to force on the right to choose is beyond me. The next thing will be demanding parents not to let toddlers play with razor blades.
I think you are right that abortion-bound women are generally short-sighted, just trying to get the problem taken care of quickly. However, I think a lot of them do intend to someday get married and have kids, and it would give them pause to think that they might not be able to do that later. The idea is, “get this taken care of and nobody will ever know, and the rest of my life will go on as I had planned it.” So I have hope that this might make a difference to some women.
Also, the thought of giving birth to a baby who dies in a few days is just horrible (not that abortion isn’t worse). Nobody would want to go through that. It is also extremely not-private. All the friends and relatives know, and you can’t mourn in secret. As opposed to abortion.
Study: Abortion causes later premature births
According to a new study, having an abortion can cause serious complications with later pregnancies. The study was ironically enough done in France.
Having an abortion almost doubles a woman’s risk of giving birth dangerously early in a later preg…
Sadly, women who consider abortion are often
seeking an immediate and permanent solution to a ‘problem’ that threatens to impinge dramatically and dependantly upon their lives. Fear and uncertainty give way to denial that they are willfully eradicating anything more than a bunch of cells.
Though I would aplaud any media coverage that gives credence to the Pro-Life argument in Pro-Death Britain, I fear that this approach will have little effect upon those who are contemplating abortion.
Education is key, but it needs to start in the school system, before those teen’s engaging in sexual experimentation discover to their jaw dropping amazement, that baby making can be as easy as 5 minutes behind the bike sheds in their lunch break.
God Bless.
Well, I wouldn’t be too surprised with the Telegraph putting out something like this. If it were the Guardian, then Satan would be wearing a parka right this minute. 🙂
1.7%. Big obvious deal.
If people keep linking abortion to obscure medical problems, mabye we can convince some more people who won’t listen to any rational arguments that its wrong, tho’.
Kosh – not 1.7%, 1.7 TIMES.
This may discourage a lot of women who want a child, ‘but not now’ to not have one.
