The man with the best name in the college of cardinals (or the worst name, depending on how you look at it) has passed: Cardinal Sin has died. He was 76 years old.
Though under the age 80 cutoff for voting in conclaves, Cardinal Sin was too ill to make the ourney to Rome to participate in the election of Benedict XVI last April. Now he has followed John Paul II into the Great Beyond.
Cardinal Sin was an important figure in the effort to cultivate democracy and better government in the Philippines, though the road was rough.
After the fall of the dictator Marcos, government corruption remained high. "We got rid of Ali Baba, but the forty thieves remained," Cardinal Sin commented.
Requiescat in pacem.
He often joked: “when I die, people will know that I am a mortal Sin”
Christ has conquered the heart of Sin, and swallowed it up in life.
Go on to your reward, good and faithful servant!

God has claimed His good servant. I pray He sends us more.
Under his watch, not only were two corrupt leaders overthrown, he managed to protect both the pro-life and pro-marriage/family stance of Philippine law from many challenges. He was a model bishop, and a good man. The Church needs more leaders like him.
As a Filipino-American, I grew up remembering Cardinal Sin as the Filipino cardinal with the funny name. He was very much influential in trying to bring Christ’s Kingdom on earth, or at least in the Philippines, with the defense of pro-life and pro-family laws, as was stated by JonathanR. May Cardinal Sin continue to pray for us from his Heavenly home.
n the ceremony in which he formally relinquished the Archbishopric he had held for 29 years, he reiterated his creed:
“My duty was to put Christ in politics. Politics without Christ is the greatest scourge of our nation.”
I really think Godfreed Daneels had and has the best name in the College. And I know that W.C. Fields would agree with me.
