We all do this, so I am not criticizing Protestants, but much of our shameful history is purposely erased from our corporate memory. Many who came to the New World were religious zealots, not here for religious liberty, but here to set up little city theocracies. You could be sent to the stocks for not attending church or because you publicly kissed your wife. Later crazy utopian communities were set up like the Amana Colonies and others who used eugenics to genetically “purify” us from sin. The 1800’s had so many prophets with visions THAT is what Barnum was referring to when he said a “sucker is born every minute.” Protestant America has attempted to wiped clean the slate of these histories because they are so embarrassing. Oh well, like I said, we all do that with our own lives, so why not our countries. However, the real story is quite interesting.
@Former Adventist Hasty generalizations are illogical.
@foxywebs2 I actually wrote a book about this, so it is hardly hasty. But I didn’t meant to come across as painting all of America with this “crazy” brush. I am just pointing out how these portions of history get edited out.
@Former Adventist
Did you mean Amana, or were you, instead, referring to Oneida, with their “enlightened” practice of “Stirpiculture”?
@SouthCoast There were many of them SouthCoast. I can’t remember if Amana and Oneida were the same, but somewhere in my files there is a list of at least eighteen of these utopian communities. There were more, these just were the ones I researched….
