Did you know? In Ezekiel 9:4 the prophet is told: “Go through the midst of the city, through the midst of Jerusalem, and set a Tau upon the foreheads of the men that sigh and that cry for all the abominations that be done in the midst thereof.” Tau–the last letter of the Hebrew alphabet–was written as a cross or X. May I add a few details as a native speaker of (modern) Hebrew? The letter’s name is pronounced tav (tau is a Greek letter). “Tav” literally means “sign” (all Hebrew letter names are from the name of the picture where they originated – for example our K comes from Kaf כ which means a spoon and still looks like one). In biblical times it was written similar to the way our X is (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biblical_Hebrew_orthography). BTW, according to verses 1-3 it isn’t the prophet who goes through Jerusalem, but one of the invading army that destroys it (the guy with linen and ink).
