  4. Abortion is not a big issue in the UK. It is not a party issue.
    All the main parties leave it to the consciences of the individual MP.
    This guy is trying to make it a party issue. He will fail.

  8. Here’s a US story about parties of choice:
    Mrs. Murphy meet up with Mrs. O’Tootle in the street and said, “Do you know what the Senator’s gone and done? He’s become a Republican!”
    “No!” said Mrs. O’Tootle. “And wasn’t I just seeing him at Mass the other day!”
    The historical reasons are a little — complex.
    Certainly I would be fascinated to know why it’s been Labor.

  9. Labour was seen as the “natural party of choice” for Catholics before because the anti-materialist teachings of Catholicism was often mistaken by stupid journalists to be in conformity with Labour’s socialism.

  10. In the UK as in this country, the Tory or Liberal/National parties were seen as being in support of capital and the bosses, whereas the Labour party was seen to fight for “the working man”. Many Irish in UK were very working class and in many cases persecuted, so Labour was their party of choice.
    Much the same applied in NZ & Oz- (Dunno about Canada) but because – particularly in NZ – the current Labour party now persues liberal, feminist and Marxist policies, Catholics are turning away from Labour in droves. Our Bishops have spoken out loudly against their policies.
    Hope they get the bum’s rush at the next election in September.
