Has There Been a Black Pope?

Q: Have there ever been any black popes?

A: Not yet, but there are three African cardinals (Gantin, Arinze, and Thiandoum) right now who are considered possible candidates for the papacy at the next conclave. The Africans also have a strong reputation for theological orthodoxy. Frankly, I can’t wait until we have a black pope. It will really put the kibosh on all this “white man’s religion” nonsense about Christianity. In fact, most Catholics right now are persons of color (though that isn’t true about Protestants and Eastern Orthodox). God has really blessed the Catholic Church with ethnic diversity–part of why it is called “Catholic”; it is a Church for everyone, a universal body.
