I, For One, Welcome Our New Robotic Car Overlords

Did You Know? The long-promised self-driving cars are now a reality. They’re not quite commercially available yet, but they’re out there on the roads, driving right beside you, without you even knowing it. (Maybe.) Personally, I’m looking forward to these. I’m not anxious to get in one right not, but eventually, when the tech is mature, they will drive more safely than we do, and they will be a big boon for people with poor night vision. They are still controversial, though. LEARN MORE.

  1. “Really? Or do you like the point-to-point, nose-pickingly private individual mobility that the car affords? Do you enjoy the blood-pressure raising, joint-straining work of endlessly pressing the accelerator and the brake as you drive at near-walking speeds on the 405? etc.”

Worst argument ever. You cannot tell someone their opinion is wrong just because you think they don’t actually believe it.

  2. There are several places around here where I can’t even keep straight where the lanes are.  Once I almost had an accident because the lane markers shifted lanes but they were not correct.  On a path I often travel, there are yellow lane markers that force you right but the flow of traffic demands that they be ignored.  And don’t get me started about when construction demands they move the lane markers but you can’t tell the difference between the ground-down lane markers and the real ones because of the conditions.  I suppose though you could judge based on what the vehicles next to you are doing.  In other words, flow of traffic and other “hard boundaries” take priority over lane markers.
