Can You Help Me Solve the MYSTERY of *Pizza* Sauce?

Pizza_sauce What is it about pizza sauce?

I love the stuff.

What do I want on my pizza? Pizza sauce.

What do I want on my spaghetti? Pizza sauce.

What do I want on macaroni and cheese? Pizza sauce.

It tastes so much better than regular tomato sauce . . . than spaghetti sauce . . . even than salsa (though salsa is close).

Yet all are based on tomatoes, with spices making the principal taste differences.

I'm sure that I even have the correct spices in my (extensive) spice colletion–I just don't know what they are!

If you look on the label of a can of pizza sauce it just lists the relevant ingredients as being "spices."

AARGH!

Can you help me determine what makes pizza sauce so special?–what sets it apart, and ABOVE, its wannabe cousins, tomato sauce, spaghetti sauce, and even the close-runner-up, salsa?

The pictured jar even teases us by saying it's "homemade style"–but how are we supposed to make it at home???!!1

 * ANONYMOUS ASKS WHY JOHN 5:4 ISN’T IN HIS BIBLE.

JOHN 5

2 Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, which is called in Hebrew, Bethesda, having five porches. 3 In these lay a great multitude of sick people, blind, lame, paralyzed, waiting for the moving of the water. 4 For an angel went down at a certain time into the pool and stirred up the water; then whoever stepped in first, after the stirring of the water, was made well of whatever disease he had. 5 Now a certain man was there who had an infirmity thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he already had been in that condition a long time, He said to him, “Do you want to be made well?” 7 The sick man answered Him, “Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; but while I am coming, another steps down before me.” (NKJV)

NOTE FROM THE NAB:

* [5:4] Toward the end of the second  century in the West and among the fourth-century Greek Fathers, an additional verse was known: “For [from time to time] an angel of the Lord used to come down into the pool; and the water was stirred up, so the first one to get in [after the stirring of the water] was healed of whatever disease afflicted him.” The angel was a popular explanation of the turbulence and the healing powers attributed to it. This verse is missing from all early Greek manuscripts and the earliest versions, including the original Vulgate. Its vocabulary is markedly non-Johannine.

* MARY FROM AUSTRALIA ASKS ABOUT SACRED TRADITION

2 THESSALONIANS 2

[14] To this he called you through our gospel, so that you may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

[15] So then, brethren, stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by letter.

* JACK FROM ARDMORE ASKS ABOUT THE KNOWLEDGE OF CHRIST WHEN HE WAS ON EARTH

CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH

Christ’s soul and his human knowledge

471 Apollinarius of Laodicaea asserted that in Christ the divine Word had replaced the soul or spirit. Against this error the Church confessed that the eternal Son also assumed a rational, human soul.

472 This human soul that the Son of God assumed is endowed with a true human knowledge. As such, this knowledge could not in itself be unlimited: it was exercised in the historical conditions of his existence in space and time. This is why the Son of God could, when he became man, “increase in wisdom and in stature, and in favor with God and man” [Lk 2:52], and would even have to inquire for himself about what one in the human condition can learn only from experience. This corresponded to the reality of his voluntary emptying of himself, taking “the form of a slave”.

473 But at the same time, this truly human knowledge of God’s Son expressed the divine life of his person. “The human nature of God’s Son, not by itself but by its union with the Word, knew and showed forth in itself everything that pertains to God.” Such is first of all the case with the intimate and immediate knowledge that the Son of God made man has of his Father. The Son in his human knowledge also showed the divine penetration he had into the secret thoughts of human hearts.

474 By its union to the divine wisdom in the person of the Word incarnate, Christ enjoyed in his human knowledge the fullness of understanding of the eternal plans he had come to reveal. What he admitted to not knowing in this area, he elsewhere declared himself not sent to reveal [Cf. Mk 13:32, Acts 1:7.].

The Mad Gasser of Mattoon . . . Strikes in Europe!

Mad_gasser In 1944 the inhabitants of Mattoon, Illinois began reporting a series of at pltempted nighttime home invasions in which the invader used some kind of gas, sprayed through their windows, to immobilize them.

It became a huge story. Numerous calls came in to the police. Parties of armed men roamed the streets, on the watch for the "Mad Gasser" plaguing the town.

People were hysterical!

Literally!

It is  now widely thought that there was no Mad Gasser and that the whole things was a case of mass hysteria (initially started, I personally suspect, by a case of sleep paralysis).

A similar sequence of events happened in 1933-34 in Virginia.

WIKIPEDIA HAS A WRITE-UP ON BOTH.

They're both fascinating oddities in American history.

And maybe not just American.

And maybe not just history.

Turns out that there are reports from Italy–AND France–AND Spain–of thieves using sleeping gas to immobilize their victims before invading their homes.

Is there any more reality to these than the Mad Gasser of Mattoon?

For now it's an unsolved mystery, but . . .

YOU DECIDE.

BTW, it strikes me that this if there are such criminals, they're doing something *very* dangerous. Giving someone the right dose of anesthetic is tricky, and doing so by filling a large space with gas is even trickier–as the Russians found out a few years ago when they tried to use anesthetizing gas on a bunch of Chechnyan terrorists who had taken over a building. It's not like on the 1960s Batman show where you can spray someone with a bit of pink-colored smoke (which they don't even have to inhale) and have them go harmlessly to sleep until you use "Bat Wake" on them.

YAY! Power! Lights! AIR CONDITIONING!!!

Woke up a little after midnight and realized I had power again.

The nightstand lamp I had turned on beside me as an alert was shining, so I hopped up and turned on the AC. Ahhhh!!!! Getting cooler again. (They'd said on the radio to turn off the AC so it didn't instantly overtax the grid as soon as there was power but to wait until lights were back to turn it on.)

I was -very- lucky. The blackout happened while my plane was on final approach to the San Diego airport, so we were either the first or one of the first planes to land.

They got us off the plane, got us our luggage by hand, and I managed to get a taxi. Because of the downtown streetlights being out, traffic was crazy, but I got home about 2 hours after my plane landed.

For dinner I had some low carb ice cream from the freezer, figuring it would be one of the first things to go. Checked my disaster supplies by candlelight. Listened to some of The Jewish War by Josephus on an iPod.

Eventually got bored, blew out the candles, and went to sleep. Then woke up and found out I had power again! Yippie!

Don't know how Long it will last. Hopefully indefinitely!

The best parts are that I can get the house cool again (I live inland, where it's hotter) and can recharge my phone (I'd been using it heavily as an iPod on my trip back from Reno, so the battery was low when I landed, and I had to shut it off to save power. To my hosts in Reno, I got back okay; everything's fine; thanks for a great visit!).

According to what I'm reading, many, MANY people are still without power. Hoping they get power back soon, and prayers for their safety!

Who Named the TARDIS?

Susan_Foreman So, Doctor Who's very first companion, his granddaughter, Susan (pictured), was said to have named the TARDIS.

At the time it the show first went on the air in 1963, it was thought the Doctor invented the TARDIS, and so it made sense why his granddaughter might have named it.

Later it was established the TARDISes were much older than that, and had not been invented by the Doctor (unless he is also "the Other" who worked with Rassilon and Omega).

Thus whether Susan came up with the name was thrown into question.

But why?

Hello! This is a *time travel* show!

I can think of *multiple* ways Susan could have been responsible for naming a machine invented long before she was born.

That kind of time paradox is nothing!

I mean . . . we've just seen that River Song was responsible for naming *herself*–TWICE–without even trying!
